Orthopedic Surgery is the surgical specialty that requires completion of an accredited 4 year medical school and 5 year internship and orthopedic surgery residency.  To become Board certified, candidates must pass a 2 part, 2 year evaluation process that includes a test, 2 years of practice, submission of cases, and oral exams.  Orthopedic Surgeons manage musculoskeletal disorders involving the bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments, including treatment options such as therapy, bracing, injections, and surgery.  Sports medicine is a subspecialty of orthopedic surgery that emphasizes the management of athletic and sports related musculoskeletal disorders.  It requires an additional understanding of athletics and mechanism of injury.

ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical approach to joint surgery.  Most major joints and many smaller joints can be scoped.  At Orthopedic & Sports Specialists we offer arthroscopic surgery on shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles.  Many major surgeries can be offered utilizing these minimally invasive techniques, including rotator cuff repair, labral repair, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and meniscal repair.  These techniques allow these surgeries to be performed as outpatient surgery, often with accelerated recovery and rehabilitation.

SPORTS MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION

Sports medicine is a complicated science.  It involves much more than just going to medical school.  Sports specialists need to really understand the athletes and the sports they play.  Mechanism of injury and its understanding is key to directing appropriate care.  Andrew DeGruccio, M.D. not only has over 17 years of board certified practice in orthopedic surgery in the Louisville area, but he has undergraduate degrees from UCLA in kinesiology and psychobiology, the studies of human motion and mechanics and the biology and physiology of human psychology.  He has been an active participant in many sports including soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, running, and whitewater kayaking, as well as others.  The heart of sports medicine is in the act of being a team physician.  Dr. DeGruccio has been a team physician for several Louisville area sports clubs, including Doss High school football, Fern Creek High school football, Moore High school football, and the River City Rovers PDL soccer team.

TOTAL JOINT SURGERY

Total and partial joint replacement surgeries are offered at Orthopedic & Sports Specialists, including hip, knee and shoulder.  Joint replacement surgery is a life restoring surgery.  In the past, joint replacement surgery was thought of as a salvage surgery, done as the very last option.  Nowadays joint replacement surgery is recognized as a quality of life decision, allowing patients to return to and restore their healthy active lifestyles.  With current techniques and implants, 95% of patients get good to excellent results from their joint replacement, and these results last those patients 20 to 30 years on average.  If you have arthritis destroying your joint, and it is destroying your ability to live your life, then call OSS for an appointment for evaluation and x-rays, and your doctor will tell you if joint replacement surgery is an option.

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Many sports and orthopedic injuries respond very well to appropriate physical therapy.  Andrew DeGruccio, M.D. works very closely with many of the leading sports therapy programs in the Louisville metropolitan area.  Therapy protocols have been developed and are followed to achieve rapid and full recovery for the fastest possible return to sports, work and life in general.
